CASE STUDY

Design template generators for in-house staff

The challenge

The team of in-house designers and SharePoint architects needed a quick way of creating multiple design and site templates from their design toolkit and templates packages. The templates and toolkits were updated regularly and published to NPM, but they needed a way of updating the site templates as and when required.

Designers were already using Visual Studio Code, Gulp and NPM to build their toolkits and ideally wanted something to fit with that toolset.

What we did

  • Created two Yeoman generators; one for site provisioning templates, the other for branding templates.

  • Automated publishing of updated generators to NPM repository via Travis CI.

  • Created build and deployment tasks within the templates.

The impact

  • Staff can easily create site templates using the generators.

  • All projects are created and structured identically.

  • Internal and external dependencies are inherited automatically.

  • Minimal post-creation configuration is required for deployment to SharePoint environments.
