The challenge

To provide a simple mechanism for non-technical project administrators to create project sites. These sites needed specific configuration, and held specific lists, assets and (in some cases) had separate permissions. They also were required to have new functionality deployed to them.

Although SharePoint provides out-of-the-box ways to create sites, customising them and keeping them updated is a more complex task.

What we did

Created SharePoint Framework WebParts.
Utilised Azure Functions to orchestrate site creation.
Built and deployed sites using the Microsoft PnP framework (Provisioning Engine).

The impact

New sites can be created using a simple custom form.
Sites can be managed and updated using standard, supported mechanisms.
Users can see a custom list of the project sites they have access to and the status of each project.
The new sites have a consistent look and feel with the main site.
